About Palo Santo:

Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens), meaning 'holy wood' in Spanish, is a sacred tree that grows on the coast of South America. The tree belongs to the same family (Burseracae) as frankincense and myrrh. Palo Santo has a sweet and calming aroma that puts you into a mindful state of being, centering you in the present moment and carrying your passions and intentions out into the universe. Its smoke provides medicinal and therapeutic healing energy.

Purifying the spirit and clearing negative energy are common uses for palo santo wood smudge sticks, but the sacred wood is also known to inspire creativity, bring a deeper connection to the divine source, and aid in physical healing.

Traditionally this earthy scented wood was used by shamans, healers and elders in ritual prayer, purification ceremonies and for healing purposes. The ancients believed the tree had both magical and healing properties that would only be cultivated if the tree was allowed to live a full life and given a respectful death.

Today, the harvesting of palo santo wood is strictly regulated with the same guiding principles. Our supplier ensures this holy wood is treated with respect and per required practice only uses naturally fallen trees that have been lying peacefully for between 4-10 years. In fact, every fallen tree that is taken, is replaced with a seedling working towards continuously restoring the palo santo population.

How to use Palo Santo:

Lighting

Light your Palo Santo stick and let it catch fire. Allow it to burn for about 30 seconds, then gently blow it out. If needed, you can blow on the embers to keep the smoke going throughout your cleansing process. Keep in mind that you may need to relight the stick a few times. Unlike sage, which continues to burn, Palo Santo is a bit more reluctant to hold a flame. When finished, place the Palo Santo stick in a fireproof bowl or dish and allow the glow at the end of the stick to go out on its own. Alternatively, you can extinguish the embers in sand.

How to cleanse a person or space

You can use the smoke to cleanse yourself or the aura of a person by holding it close to and around the body, allowing the smoke to surround. Say aloud or silently a affirmation, for example; 'I ask that the spirit of Palo Santo please clear any negative energies or emotions that are not for the highest good.'

To smudge/cleanse a room and fill it with blessings, simply walk around the room allowing the smoke and rich aroma to flow fill the room. You can start at the front door and walk clockwise through each room with your Palo Santo. Say aloud or silently an affirmation.
